{"id":4408,"date":"2021-02-18T14:36:59","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T14:36:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/?page_id=4408"},"modified":"2021-02-22T14:13:39","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T14:13:39","slug":"theoretical-ontology-integration-approaches","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/?page_id=4408","title":{"rendered":"Theoretical ontology integration approaches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To understand the theoretical options available for combining ontologies, recent literature was reviewed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/315823608_A_shared_ontology_approach_to_semantic_representation_of_BIM_data\">Niknam &amp; Karshenas (2017)<\/a> describe 3 integration approaches:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>\u201cDevelop a single ontology that covers all knowledge domains involved in the building lifecycle\u201d<\/b> Overall, a very difficult task of agreeing concepts and relationships between <i>all<\/i> industry domains and actors. Practically impossible, however precedence is provided in the work of ISO (for example ISO19650 which sets out agreed project stakeholder roles and responsibilities) and BuildingSMART (in the provision of an open, vendor neutral data format) for examples in establishing industry-wide standards.<\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cEach domain independently develops its own ontology. The independently developed domain ontologies must be aligned for information exchange\u201d<\/b> Multiple, individually developed and domain specific taxonomies. This requires\u00a0 manual alignment between domains and, according to the authors, does not improve significantly on the current situation as far as interoperability is concerned.<\/li>\n<li><b>\u201cEach domain develops its own ontology by extending a shared (foundation) ontology\u201d<\/b> This approach consists of developing a shared semantic foundation, which is then extendable per domain, which are aligned through these shared base concepts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/shared-ontology-theory.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4417\" src=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/shared-ontology-theory.jpg\" alt=\"shared-ontology-theory\" width=\"500\" height=\"489\" srcset=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/shared-ontology-theory.jpg 783w, http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/shared-ontology-theory-300x293.jpg 300w, http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/shared-ontology-theory-520x509.jpg 520w, http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/shared-ontology-theory-740x724.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Figure 1 &#8211; Theoretical diagram for\u00a0a shared foundational approach, aligning on the semantic concept \u2018X\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although a theoretically practical solution, in practice we felt this oversimplified the challenge. Perhaps at best, it could result in a handful of shared concepts (such as \u2018material\u2019 and \u2018stakeholder\u2019 in our case) such as is established by the Building Topology Ontology by <a href=\"https:\/\/w3c-lbd-cg.github.io\/bot\/\">Rasmussen et al. (2021) <\/a>as a good example of a foundational \u2018shared\u2019 ontology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/building-topology-ontology.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4416 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/building-topology-ontology.jpg\" alt=\"building-topology-ontology\" width=\"721\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/building-topology-ontology.jpg 721w, http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/building-topology-ontology-300x171.jpg 300w, http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/building-topology-ontology-520x296.jpg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Figure 2 &#8211; Building Topology Ontology uses a version of the \u2018shared foundation approach\u2019 to integration<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It should be remembered that every ontology is built for a specific purpose, and therefore being able to directly and easily merge individuals, developed separately, was unlikely to be feasible.
