Each subsystem is characterized by a set of routine, preventive, and corrective interventions, with predefined baseline frequencies derived from literature and engineering practice.

To enable design space exploration and optimization, selected major maintenance actions were allowed to vary within realistic bounds, while routine inspections remained fixed to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Table 1

The road sub-system, maintenance follows a layered and hierarchical approach that combines frequent monitoring with progressively more intensive interventions. Regular inspection and cleaning activities are intended to detect early surface defects and maintain serviceability, while preventive pavement maintenance slows the progression of deterioration. As the pavement ages, surface renewal restores functional performance, followed by structural pavement repair to address deeper material degradation. Near the end of the service life, major rehabilitation represents a comprehensive intervention aimed at extending usability and restoring structural capacity. This staged strategy balances short-term operational performance with long-term structural integrity.

The sewer pipeline sub-system is managed with an emphasis on operational reliability and failure prevention. Routine inspection and cleaning activities are designed to monitor internal conditions and prevent blockages, while joint maintenance reduces the risk of leakage and infiltration. Localized repair interventions address isolated defects as they arise, and major repair actions are reserved for advanced deterioration requiring substantial renewal. The relatively extended intervals between major interventions reflect the protected, buried nature of the pipeline system and its lower exposure to environmental loading.

Maintenance of the tank sub-system is primarily driven by safety considerations and durability requirements. Inspection activities, both risk-based and routine, ensure continuous monitoring of structural and operational conditions. Operational and preventive maintenance actions mitigate progressive degradation and support long-term performance. Protective system renewal targets coatings and corrosion protection measures, which are critical for preserving material integrity. Structural repair interventions represent major actions undertaken when significant deterioration threatens the safety or functionality of the system, reflecting the critical role of tanks within water infrastructure networks.

The warehouse sub-system maintenance strategy focuses on preserving the performance of the building envelope. Periodic inspections enable early identification of defects, while minor repair actions address localized damage before it propagates. Major repairs restore the overall performance of the enclosure system as degradation accumulates over time. Renovation activities correspond to end-of-life interventions, providing comprehensive refurbishment to extend the functional lifespan of the structure.

For the foundation sub-system, a conservative maintenance approach is adopted due to its fundamental importance to structural safety. Routine inspection and local repair activities ensure serviceability and allow early detection of potential issues. Preventive maintenance measures are applied to limit the progression of damage and reduce long-term risk. Structural repair interventions are reserved for significant degradation scenarios, reflecting the high consequences associated with foundation failure and the need for a cautious, reliability-oriented strategy.

Figure 1 Shows the highest and lowest frequency with respect to each event.

Figure 1

Figure 2 presents the most complex and densely populated maintenance schedule among all systems, where the clustering of activities reflects the implementation of different policy scenarios, namely baseline, aggressive, and conservative approaches. In contrast, Figure 3 illustrates the sewer pipeline maintenance strategy over the project lifetime, which is characterized by a limited number of events, consisting mainly of minor interventions and a single major intervention near the end of the service life. Compared to other systems, the pipeline exhibits a low event density and short intervention durations, indicating a relatively low operational and maintenance burden. Figure 4 shows the maintenance timeline of the elevated RCC water tank; although the frequency of maintenance activities is moderate, the durations of these events are comparatively long, making this system a dominant contributor to overall life-cycle impacts. Figure 5 depicts the warehouse maintenance timeline, where a major intervention occurs close to the end of the service life, reflecting a maintenance logic driven primarily by façade- and cladding-related requirements rather than structural deterioration. Finally, Figure 6 illustrates the maintenance schedule for the residential foundation system, which follows a periodic distribution, with routine inspections occurring most frequently and major interventions appearing sparsely toward the later years of the service life.

<a
