Life Cycle Inventory and Analysis of Integrated Civil Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Goal and Scope Definition<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The focus of the\u00a0Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) and Analysis\u00a0of the integrated\u00a0one-story and multi-story residential buildings in this study is on the environmental and economic impacts of the systems throughout their life cycle. This analysis aims to quantify\u00a0resource consumption, emissions, and energy usage\u00a0associated with the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair activities of the integrated system. By understanding these factors, we\u00a0aim to\u00a0develop optimized maintenance strategies that minimize environmental impact while ensuring long-term serviceability.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0scope\u00a0of this study includes the entire\u00a0life cycle of the integrated building system, from raw material extraction to maintenance and repair activities. As depicted in\u00a0Figure 1, the system boundary encompasses multiple stages:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Raw Material Extraction and Processing:\u00a0The production of concrete, steel, and reinforcement materials used in construction.<\/li>\n<li>Fabrication and Construction:\u00a0The transformation of raw materials into building components and the assembly of structures within an urban complex.<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance and repairs:\u00a0The use and maintenance of the one-story and multi-story buildings, including periodic repairs and system upgrades.<\/li>\n<li>Emissions and Energy Consumption:\u00a0Environmental impacts such as\u00a0CO\u2082, NO\u2093, and SO\u2082\u00a0emissions, along with overall energy usage throughout the building life cycle.<\/li>\n<li>Economic Costs:\u00a0The financial implications of material production, energy consumption, and maintenance interventions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>for our integrated system we\u00a0follow a\u00a0cradle-to-operation\u00a0approach, meaning it includes all processes\u00a0from raw material extraction to long-term maintenance\u00a0but does not consider demolition and disposal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Influential-factors-on-cash-flow-7-e1738406511933.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20043\" src=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Influential-factors-on-cash-flow-7-e1738406511933.png\" alt=\"influential-factors-on-cash-flow-7\" width=\"800\" height=\"482\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Figure\u00a01.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<strong>Life-Cycle Inventory of Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The table 1 categorizes materials based on their scope in construction, including RC (Reinforced Concrete for the first system), PRC+RC (Precast &amp; Reinforced Concrete), RCO (Reinforced Concrete for the second system), Steel Joist, RC Joist, and Block type. Each entry provides the following information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quantities: The total amount of material used in the construction process is calculated based on standard material requirements for one cubic meter of reinforced concrete.<\/li>\n<li>Energy Consumption: The energy required for material production and processing.<\/li>\n<li>CO\u2082, NO\u2093, and SO\u2082 Emissions: The environmental impact associated with the use of each material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Table 1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-01-1708052-e1738407865825.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20049\" src=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot-2025-02-01-1708052-e1738407865825.png\" alt=\"screenshot-2025-02-01-170805\" width=\"600\" height=\"585\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the RC residential building system, the proposed coefficients (Table 2) for maintenance events (M, PR, CR) are determined based on lifecycle assessment studies and structural repair guidelines. Routine maintenance operations (M), such as minor repairs, sealing, and inspections, are assigned a coefficient of 0.15, reflecting their relatively low impact on the overall structural integrity compared to full replacement. This is justified by guidelines in ACI 546R-14[1] and ISO 16311-2[2], which indicate that routine maintenance primarily serves to delay deterioration rather than restore full performance. Partial replacement (PR), which includes localized concrete repair, reinforcement treatment, and resurfacing, is given a coefficient of 0.30, as it represents a more substantial intervention that restores some structural capacity but does not equate to a full system overhaul. This value is derived from EN 1504-9:2008[3] and Fib Model Code 2010[4], where partial repair strategies are quantified based on material loss and rehabilitation efficiency. Finally, critical repair (CR), which involves significant structural restoration, such as large-area concrete replacement and reinforcement strengthening, is assigned a coefficient of 0.70. This higher value reflects its extensive impact on structural integrity, nearing full replacement but still not requiring complete reconstruction. This assumption aligns with empirical engineering studies on major infrastructure maintenance from Fib Model Code 2010. These coefficients ensure that interventions are proportionally scaled in lifecycle cost analysis, enabling a more accurate maintenance strategy optimization for long-term performance and cost efficiency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Table\u00a02.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-02-04-at-14.43.06-e1738658283367.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20413\" src=\"http:\/\/141.23.68.248\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-02-04-at-14.43.06-e1738658283367.jpeg\" alt=\"whatsapp-image-2025-02-04-at-14-43-06\" width=\"600\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Using the values from the Life-Cycle Inventory of Materials table, the results of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are generated for various material combinations.
